Why blog? Well, do you want to make money or do you simply want a wider audience for your writing? It is important that you determine why you are writing your blog so you can market it successfully.
Choose your blog’s theme
Think about your audience. Ask yourself, ‘what am I passionate about?’. If you love the topic of your blog, chances are others will too.
Tip: You are likely to gain more readers if you have a specific theme. If popularity and making money is important to you, I’ve made a list of the most successful blog topics: Technology & gadgets, celebrity news, fashion, jobs and employment opportunities, product & service reviews, movies music & entertainment, photography & art, social life & relationships, small business and pets.
Spread the word
Once your blog has been set up, spread the word. Inform friends and family, put a link up on your facebook and twitter accounts and add your blog’s URL at the bottom of emails.
Some helpful websites
Submit your blog to search engines. Most of the time, you can do this for free and with little effort.
Post your URL and comment on forums relevant to your blog posts. Be active in the blogging community. Comment on other blogs and become involved when others comment on your blog.
Posts that ask lots of questions encourage more comments and don’t be afraid of inviting people to comment. Perhaps you could write a small message at the top of your blog. Be inviting!
Google Adsense is a great way to make money from your blog. Adverts relating to your blog content will appear either in your blog sidebars or below/above each post. Blend your adverts so they match with the design and layout of your blog. Think about colour scheme, size and layout.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
If you were searching for your article/ post, what would you type into the search engine? Don’t underestimate the importance of a title. Use key words so visitors will find your piece with ease. When choosing your keywords, don’t opt for singular words – opt for key phrases of two-four words in length. Using everyday language is important.
Be consistent and persistent
Once you start to attract readers to your blog, you will want them to keep coming back, so post regularly and be consistent with your theme. Your blog is your brand after all.
Everyone always loves something free and giving away freebies on your blog will go down well. If you’re blogging about web design, could you provide free plug-in bloggers could download? Perhaps you could give away free photographs if you write a photography blog.
Your Personality Should be Part of Your Blog
Whatever your blog topic, it is important to inject your personality into it. How will your blog stand out from all the other similar sites? Be aware of your writing style and keep it consistent throughout.
